LIP & TONGUE TIE - OLDER CHILDREN (3+)

While lip and tongue ties are present at birth, not all infants present with symptoms. Some children are able to compensate and symptoms will go unnoticed or may not be severe. As a child grows, some children may show symptoms impacting their ability to speak, chew, or difficulty sleeping. At KC Tongue Tie Co. we offer minimally-invasive surgery to treat tongue-tie in toddlers and older children. As pediatric dentists, our doctors are trained and experienced with young children.

SYMPTOMS OF TONGUE-TIE AND LIP-TIE IN KIDS

As children grow and develop, their speech may be impacted by a tongue tie or lip tie. In certain toddlers, tongue and lip ties may prohibit proper movement of the oral structures, delaying certain speech sounds and communication. Children may also have difficulty with eating, chewing food, gagging, and digestion problems. Children who have restrictions may also experience difficulty sleeping, wetting the bed, and symptoms of ADHD due to lack of sleep. Some symptoms that may indicate a tongue or lip tie include:

  • Frustration with communication
  • Difficult to understand by parents or outsiders
  • Trouble with certain speech sounds
  • Difficulty transitioning to solid foods
  • Slow eater
  • Gagging or spitting out food
  • Constipation
  • Reflux
  • Sleeps in strange positions, neck extended
  • Wakes easily or often
  • Sleeping with mouth open
  • Grinding teeth while sleeping
  • Snores
  • Wets the bed

Treatment of symptoms in children may be the best option to help prevent problems that persist into adulthood.

CHILD TONGUE TIE RELEASE

Young and older children alike can be treated for lip and tongue ties at Kansas City Tongue Tie Co. Our doctors are trained to not only treat tongue ties, but to also help children with fears and anxieties associated with medical procedures. Treatment using a CO2 laser is a quick 15-20 second procedure that can include numbing to ensure maximum comfort. Most children are able to go back to normal activities soon after the procedure with minimal discomfort and little to no bleeding.
